The recent directive of banks to link customer’s account with Aadhaar card has hit the players hard in availing their annual scholarship. Many city athletes are facing problems in drawing the money from their accounts meant for scholarship as they are still without Aadhaar cards.
Some of the players have complained that they are yet to get the scholarship money for the year 2014-15. UT sports department officials claim that the amount was released after some delay due to budgetary constraints. But when the athletes approached the banks for disbursal of the money they were told that the money can only be withdrawn after submitting the photocopies of their Aadhar cards.
“There is no lapse on the part of our department. Players may be facing problem in adhering to certain bank conditions,” said Dr Mahendra Singh, Joint Director (Sports). Players said they are facing financial problems while they wait to get their Aadhaar cards issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). “It will take another 30 days. Earlier, the delay was on the part of the department as they had exhausted the budget,” said Pradeep, a softball player. Sources said a certain amount was released partially as the allotted budged was exhausted in 2014-15. The remaining amount was released after a few months. “Those who have fulfilled the bank criteria have been paid but others have to wait till they submit the document,” a source said. Players winning the top three positions in the inter-school, inter-college, state level, and national championships are eligible scholarships.
