The Finance Ministry further said that the Oil, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution ministries and all the public authorities concerned in States and Union Territories should take prompt action to comply with this rule.

On 11th August, the Supreme Court had said that the Aadhaar unique identity system will not be compulsory for Indian citizens to benefit from government services.

It had also ruled that no authority shall seek Aadhaar cards from citizens to provide any government services.

However, on the discretion of the card-owner, it can be used for availing the subsidies in the public distribution system (PDS), gas cylinders and for buying kerosene.
