Aadhaar enrolment in Shillong shortly

SHILLONG: Enrolment by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) for issue of the unique biometric enabled number – Aadhaar – is likely to start in Shillong shortly.

Sources informed that the issues with the vendors, who are conducting the enrolment, have been resolved and they are likely to start the enrolment shortly.

“We think they (vendors) will join by next week and then we will send them to different parts of the town for the enrolment,” officials said.

It is learnt that around 20 per cent residents in East Khasi Hills have been enrolled for the Aadhaar card.

The enrolment news comes just days after consumers of subsidized Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in Shillong region were perturbed following an SMS alert sent to their mobile phones asking them to submit details of Aadhaar cards to the LPG distributors failing which their subsidy transfer will be kept on hold.

However, IOC has clarified that Aadhaar is not mandatory for availing LPG subsidy. A notice issued by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas clarified that LPG subsidy for beneficiaries in Meghalaya and Assam would continue to be credited to their bank accounts without Aadhaar number.
